چکیده

Abstract This study investigates the second language (L2) acquisition of a constraint on definiteness in Japanese floating numeral quantifiers (NQs) by native English and Korean speakers. The arises because specific structural relation between NQ its associated noun, resulting an obligatorily indefinite interpretation. indirect – or, covert encoding this structure allows investigation predictions based cline difficulty proposed Cho Slabakova (2014) , whereby L2 property may be facilitated if first (L1) expresses relevant feature overtly. is such language, having overt morphology to express definiteness, whereas has NQs that are obligatorily, covertly, indefinite, as Japanese. Sensitivity was measured using acceptability judgement task. Although both L1-Korean L1-English speakers showed sensitivity at group level, follow-up analyses suggested had more consistent knowledge. We argue complexity task which greater for English-speakers than Korean-speakers played bigger role attainment versus L1.

(Non)floating Quantifiers in Japanese

This paper suggests that the continuation-passing style (CPS), a classic technique commonly used in computer science but that has recently been successfully applied to linguistics as in the case of Barker (2002) and others, accounts for different interpretations for floating quantifiers (FQ) and non-floating quantifiers (nonFQ). In a determinerless language such as Japanese, the interpretation ...

Floating Numeral Quantifiers as an Unaccusative Diagnostic in Native, Heritage and L2 Japanese Speakers Running head: Unaccusativity in three Japanese grammars

This study investigates the knowledge of unaccusativity in Japanese native, heritage, and second/foreign language speakers with respect to licensing of floating numeral quantifiers (FNQs) by unaccusative and unergative subjects (the FNQ diagnostic). Two acceptability judgment experiments were conducted to examine (i) whether and how judgments of the three populations differ with respect to the ...

The Acquisition of Definiteness Feature by Persian L2 Learners of English

The definiteness feature in English is both LF and PF interpretable while Persian is a language in which this feature is LF-interpretable but PF-uninterpretable. Hence, there is no overt article or morphological inflection in Persian denoting a definite context. Furthermore, Persian partially encodes specificity not definiteness. In definiteness both the speaker and hearer are involved while in...

Anchoring Floating Quantifiers in Japanese-to-English Machine Translation

In this paper we present an algorithm to anchor floating quantifiers in Japanese, a language in which quantificational nouns and numeralclassifier combinations can appear separated from the noun phrase they quantify. The algorithm differentiates degree and event modifiers from nouns that quantify noun phrases. It then finds a suitable anchor for such floating quantifiers. To do this, the algori...
